Köhöpymistä is a Finnish term that translates to coughing in English. It is a sudden and often violent reflex that helps to clear the airways of mucus, foreign particles, irritants, and microbes. Coughing is an essential protective mechanism for the respiratory system.

The act of coughing involves a deep inhalation followed by the forceful expulsion of air from the lungs against a closed glottis. When the glottis is suddenly opened, the rapid airflow helps to dislodge and remove any obstructions. This reflex can be triggered by various stimuli, including inflammation, irritation, or the presence of foreign bodies in the trachea, bronchi, or lungs.

Coughing can be categorized as either acute or chronic. Acute coughs typically last for less than three weeks and are often associated with common respiratory infections like the common cold or influenza. Chronic coughs, on the other hand, persist for longer than eight weeks and can be a symptom of more serious underlying conditions such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
