Kõlavärvi is an Estonian term that translates to "timbre" or "tone color" in English, referring to the distinct quality of a sound. It is what allows us to differentiate between two musical notes or voices played at the same pitch and loudness. This unique characteristic is determined by the complex combination of overtones, or harmonics, present in a sound, as well as its attack, decay, sustain, and release characteristics.

The presence and relative intensity of these overtones are crucial in defining kõlavärvi. For example, a violin and a flute playing the same note will have different kõlavärvi because their instruments produce different sets of overtones with varying amplitudes. The way a sound begins (attack), how it fades (decay), how long it is sustained, and how it finally ends (release) also contribute significantly to its perceived quality.
