Kõhuõõnt, also known as the peritoneal cavity, is the space within the abdomen that is lined by the peritoneum. The peritoneum is a serous membrane that consists of two layers: the parietal peritoneum, which lines the abdominal wall, and the visceral peritoneum, which covers the abdominal organs. Between these two layers is a potential space, the peritoneal cavity, which normally contains a small amount of lubricating fluid.

This cavity encloses many of the digestive organs, including the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, spleen, and pancreas. It also contains parts of the reproductive organs and the bladder. The organs within the kõhuõõnt are suspended by folds of peritoneum called mesenteries, which also carry blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatic vessels to and from the organs.

The kõhuõõnt plays a crucial role in protecting and supporting the abdominal organs. The peritoneal fluid helps to reduce friction between organs as they move during digestion and other bodily functions. The cavity also allows for movement and expansion of organs, such as the stomach filling with food.

In certain medical conditions, such as peritonitis, the kõhuõõnt can become inflamed. Accumulation of excess fluid within the cavity is known as ascites. Surgical procedures often involve accessing or operating within the kõhuõõnt.
