Käyttäjätilat are a fundamental concept in operating systems and computer security. They represent different levels of privilege or access rights that a user or process can have on a system. This hierarchical structure is designed to protect system resources and prevent unauthorized actions.

At the highest level is the kernel mode, also known as supervisor mode or privileged mode. In this mode, the operating system kernel has unrestricted access to all hardware and memory. This is where sensitive operations like managing hardware, memory, and processes occur.

The other main mode is user mode. Processes running in user mode have limited access to system resources. They cannot directly access hardware or critical system data. Instead, they must request these services from the kernel through system calls. This isolation is crucial for stability and security, as a crash or malicious action in user mode will not bring down the entire system.

The transition between user mode and kernel mode is carefully controlled. When a user process needs to perform a privileged operation, it triggers a system call, which causes a switch to kernel mode. After the kernel performs the requested operation, it switches back to user mode, returning the result to the process. This mechanism ensures that the kernel remains in control and that user programs cannot directly compromise the system. Different operating systems might implement variations of these modes and their management, but the core principle of separating privileged operations from general user execution remains consistent.
