Käynnistinmoottori, often referred to as a starter motor, is an essential component in internal combustion engine vehicles. Its primary function is to initiate the engine's rotation, allowing it to start and run on its own power. Without a starter motor, manually turning over a car engine would be impractical and impossible for most people.

The starter motor is typically an electric motor, powered by the vehicle's battery. When the ignition key is turned to the "start" position, a signal is sent to the starter motor. This signal activates a solenoid, which in turn engages a small gear, known as the pinion gear, with a larger ring gear attached to the engine's flywheel. The pinion gear then spins at high speed, transferring rotational force to the flywheel, which causes the engine's crankshaft to turn. Once the engine begins to run under its own combustion, the ignition key is released, and the starter motor disengages.
