Käiguvahetusele refers to the act of changing gears in a vehicle. This process is fundamental to the operation of manual transmission vehicles, allowing the driver to adjust the engine's speed and torque to suit different driving conditions. When a driver shifts gears, they are essentially altering the ratio between the engine's rotational speed and the wheels' rotational speed. This is achieved by selecting different sets of gears within the transmission.

The need for käiguvahetusele arises from the limited operating range of an internal combustion engine. Engines produce their most efficient power and torque within a specific range of revolutions per minute (RPM). Lower gears provide higher torque, which is necessary for starting from a standstill, climbing hills, or accelerating quickly. As the vehicle gains speed, higher gears are selected to allow the engine to run at a lower, more fuel-efficient RPM while maintaining or increasing speed.

In a manual transmission, the driver operates a clutch pedal and a gear shifter. Releasing the clutch re-engages the engine, and the vehicle continues to move in the new gear ratio.
