Kylmäkäynnistysautomatiikka, often referred to as cold start system, is a mechanism designed to facilitate the starting of an internal combustion engine, particularly in cold ambient temperatures. Its primary function is to ensure that the engine receives the correct fuel-air mixture and ignition timing to overcome the increased resistance and reduced efficiency associated with a cold engine.

When an engine is cold, the fuel tends to condense on the cylinder walls, leading to a leaner fuel-air mixture than ideal for combustion. This can result in rough idling, misfires, and difficulty in starting. Kylmäkäynnistysautomatiikka addresses this by enriching the fuel-air mixture. This is typically achieved through a cold start injector or by modifying the operation of the fuel injection system or carburetor.
