Kylmäkapasiteetti, often translated as cooling capacity, refers to the amount of heat a refrigeration or air conditioning system can remove from a space over a specific period. It is a crucial parameter for determining the effectiveness and sizing of such systems.

The standard unit for measuring cooling capacity is the British Thermal Unit per hour (BTU/hr) in some regions, while the watt (W) or kilowatt (kW) is used in the metric system. Another common unit, particularly for air conditioning, is the ton of refrigeration. One ton of refrigeration is equivalent to the rate of heat removal required to freeze one short ton (2,000 pounds) of water at 32°F into ice at 32°F in 24 hours, which is approximately 12,000 BTU/hr or about 3.517 kW.

The cooling capacity required for a particular application depends on various factors. These include the size of the space to be cooled, the amount of heat generated within the space (from occupants, equipment, and lighting), the desired temperature, and external factors like ambient temperature, insulation, and the number of windows.

Accurately calculating the necessary cooling capacity is essential for efficient operation. An undersized system will struggle to maintain the desired temperature, leading to discomfort and potentially overworking the equipment. Conversely, an oversized system can be inefficient, leading to higher energy consumption and poor humidity control due to short cycling. Manufacturers provide specifications for their units, and professionals use load calculation methods to determine the appropriate cooling capacity for residential, commercial, and industrial settings.
