Kylmaskin is the Swedish term for a cooling machine: a device that removes heat from a space, substance, or process to achieve a lower temperature than its surroundings. In practice, the term covers household appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners, as well as industrial cooling systems used in manufacturing and data centers.

Most modern kylmaskiner operate according to the vapor-compression refrigeration cycle. The cycle uses a refrigerant that circulates through a closed loop of four main components: a compressor, a condenser, an expansion device, and an evaporator. The compressor raises the refrigerant’s pressure and temperature; the condenser releases heat to the surroundings; the expansion device lowers pressure; and the evaporator absorbs heat from the space being cooled.

Other cooling technologies include absorption refrigeration, which uses heat rather than mechanical work to drive the cycle, and thermoelectric cooling, which relies on the Peltier effect for small devices. Some systems are designed for very low temperatures (cryogenic cooling) or for special processes in industry.

Applications range from domestic refrigeration and air conditioning to industrial process cooling, food preservation, and electronic equipment cooling in data centers and labs. Energy efficiency and cost of operation depend on the design, refrigerant choice, ambient conditions, and control strategies.

Environmental and safety aspects include the choice of refrigerants, which may have ozone depletion potential or global warming potential. Regulations aim to reduce emissions and phase out high-GWP substances. Energy ratings and standards (for example COP or SEER performance metrics) guide selection and operation, while regular maintenance and leak detection are important for safety and efficiency.

Maintenance typically involves routine inspection, cleaning of heat exchangers, checking seals and connections, leak testing, and professional servicing of compressors and refrigerants. Proper disposal of old equipment and refrigerants is required to minimize environmental impact.
