Kvantizácia is a term derived from the Czech word "kvant," meaning quantum. In a general sense, it refers to the process of dividing something into discrete units or levels. This concept is fundamental in quantum mechanics, where physical quantities such as energy, momentum, and charge are not continuous but exist only in specific, quantized amounts.

The idea of quantization emerged from observations in the early 20th century that classical physics could not explain. For example, Max Planck's work on blackbody radiation led him to propose that energy is emitted and absorbed in discrete packets, or quanta, rather than in a continuous flow. Albert Einstein further developed this concept with his explanation of the photoelectric effect, where light itself is quantized into particles called photons.

In digital signal processing, quantization is a crucial step in converting analog signals into digital ones. An analog signal, which can have an infinite range of values, is mapped to a finite set of digital values. This process inevitably introduces some error, known as quantization error, which is the difference between the original analog value and its quantized digital representation. The accuracy of this conversion depends on the number of quantization levels used; more levels lead to less error but require more data to store.

The principle of quantization is not limited to physics and signal processing. It can be applied in various fields to simplify complex systems or data by discretizing continuous variables. This allows for easier manipulation, storage, and analysis of information that would otherwise be unwieldy. The core idea remains the same: transforming something continuous into a series of distinct, countable steps.
