The number of quantization levels is determined by the resolution of the converter. For instance, an 8-bit ADC has 256 (2^8) quantization levels, while a 16-bit ADC has 65,536 (2^16) levels. A higher number of bits generally results in a finer quantization level, which can improve the accuracy and fidelity of the converted signal.

Quantization error occurs when the continuous analog signal is approximated by one of the discrete quantization levels. This error can introduce distortion and noise into the digital signal. To minimize quantization error, techniques such as oversampling and dithering are often employed.

In the context of digital images, quantization levels refer to the number of distinct colors or shades that can be represented. For example, an 8-bit image can display 256 different shades of each color channel (red, green, blue), while a 16-bit image can display 65,536 different shades.
