Quadrupole mass analyzers are a type of mass spectrometer used to determine the mass-to-charge ratio of ions. They operate by using a combination of direct current (DC) and radio frequency (RF) electric fields applied to four parallel electrodes, known as quadrupoles. These oscillating electric fields create a unique potential well that allows only ions of a specific mass-to-charge ratio to pass through to the detector at any given time. Ions with other mass-to-charge ratios will be deflected and collide with the electrodes. By systematically varying the DC and RF voltages, the quadrupole can be scanned to allow ions of different mass-to-charge ratios to reach the detector sequentially, thus generating a mass spectrum.
