Kuvapikseleitä, often referred to as pixels, are the smallest individual element of a raster image. Imagine a digital photograph as a grid; each tiny square within that grid is a pixel. These pixels are the fundamental building blocks that, when arranged together, form the complete image that you see on a screen or in a print.

Each pixel contains a specific color value. In digital imaging, this color is typically represented by a combination of numerical values that define its intensity and hue. For example, in a common color model like RGB (Red, Green, Blue), each pixel's color is determined by the varying amounts of red, green, and blue light that combine to create the final color. The more bits used to represent a pixel's color, the more colors it can display, leading to richer and more nuanced images.

The density of pixels within a given area is known as resolution, often measured in pixels per inch (PPI) for displays or dots per inch (DPI) for prints. A higher resolution means more pixels are packed into the same space, resulting in a sharper and more detailed image. Conversely, a lower resolution means fewer pixels, which can lead to a blocky or "pixellated" appearance, especially when an image is enlarged beyond its original size. Understanding pixels is crucial for comprehending how digital images are created, displayed, and manipulated.
