Kuumankäyrän, meaning "heat curve" in Finnish, refers to a graphical representation that illustrates the changes in temperature of a substance as heat is added to it. This curve is a fundamental concept in thermodynamics and physical chemistry, used to understand phase transitions and specific heat capacities.

A typical kuumankäyrän plots temperature on the y-axis and the amount of heat added on the x-axis. Initially, as heat is applied to a solid, its temperature rises linearly, reflecting its specific heat capacity. Upon reaching its melting point, the temperature plateaus as the added heat is absorbed to break the bonds holding the solid structure together, a process known as a phase transition from solid to liquid. Once all the solid has melted, the temperature of the liquid then begins to rise again with further heat addition, again proportional to its specific heat capacity. This continues until the boiling point is reached, where another plateau occurs as the liquid transforms into a gas. After all the liquid has vaporized, the temperature of the gas increases with continued heating.
