Kuumalevyn, also known as a hot plate, is a portable self-contained tabletop small appliance displaying one or more electric heating elements. It is used for cooking food. Hot plates are often used in situations where a full-sized stove is not available or practical, such as in small apartments, dorm rooms, or for temporary use. They can also be useful for specific cooking tasks that might be inconvenient on a main stovetop.

The heating element typically consists of a coil of resistance wire, which heats up when electricity passes through it. This heat is then transferred to cookware placed on top of the element.
