Kuulmeluude, known scientifically as the malleus, is one of the three tiny ossicles found in the middle ear of mammals, including humans. It is the outermost and largest of these three bones, situated between the tympanic membrane (eardrum) and the incus. The malleus is hammer-shaped, which is reflected in its name, as "malleus" is Latin for hammer.

The primary function of the malleus is to transmit sound vibrations from the eardrum to the incus. When sound waves strike the eardrum, it vibrates. These vibrations are then transferred to the malleus, which articulates with the incus. This chain of ossicles acts as a mechanical amplifier, efficiently passing these vibrations deeper into the ear's auditory system. The malleus is attached to the eardrum at its manubrium, a handle-like projection. The head of the malleus articulates with the body of the incus, forming a crucial link in the process of hearing. Together with the incus and stapes, the malleus plays a vital role in converting airborne sound waves into mechanical vibrations that can be processed by the inner ear.
