Kurkkutulehdus, also known as tonsillitis, is an inflammation of the tonsils, which are the two oval-shaped masses of tissue at the back of the throat. It is a common condition that can affect people of all ages, but it is most frequently seen in children. Tonsillitis can be caused by a variety of factors, including viral infections, bacterial infections, or allergic reactions.

Symptoms of tonsillitis typically include sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. In some cases, the tonsils may appear white or yellowish, and there may be pus at the back of the throat. The condition can range from mild to severe, with severe cases potentially leading to complications such as peritonsillar abscess, which is a collection of pus behind the tonsils.

Treatment for tonsillitis depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the symptoms. Mild cases may be treated with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain relievers. More severe cases may require antibiotics to treat bacterial infections or surgical removal of the tonsils, known as tonsillectomy, to prevent recurrent infections. In some cases, tonsillitis may be caused by an allergic reaction, in which case antihistamines or other allergy medications may be prescribed.

Prevention of tonsillitis involves maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding close contact with people who have infections, and practicing good hand hygiene. In some cases, tonsillectomy may be recommended to prevent recurrent infections in individuals who are at high risk for developing tonsillitis.
