Kulumisimääränä is a Finnish term describing the rate at which a physical asset wears down, deteriorates, or loses functional capacity due to use, age, or operating conditions. The concept is used in asset management, maintenance planning, and depreciation modeling to express how quickly an asset declines in value or usefulness over time.

In practice, kulumisimääränä can be applied as a parameter in different depreciation or impairment calculations. It can be used in a straight-line or usage-based framework to estimate periodic wear costs. The wear rate may be expressed as a percentage per year, per unit of usage, or as a combination of time and usage. Factors influencing the rate include load, operating environment, maintenance quality, and asset design. Because wear is not strictly constant, the rate may be adjusted over the asset’s life to reflect changing conditions or utilization.

Calculation and modeling typically involve these forms: (1) fixed wear rate depreciation, where annual expense equals cost multiplied by the wear rate; (2) usage-based depreciation, where depreciation equals the cost multiplied by the fraction of actual usage relative to estimated total usage; (3) dynamic wear rates, where the rate varies with time, usage, or condition indicators. In financial reporting, the chosen method should comply with relevant accounting standards (for example, depreciation rules under IFRS or GAAP), and the wear rate should be supported by evidence about expected asset use and condition.
