Kulturbærere, or culture bearers, is a term used in cultural studies, anthropology, and sociology to describe individuals or groups who preserve, transmit, and renew a community's cultural heritage across generations. The word is Danish in origin, with kultur meaning culture and bærer meaning bearer; in practice the concept is used in Danish and Norwegian contexts to refer to those who carry cultural knowledge through time.

Culture bearers perform a range of roles: preserving language and oral histories, maintaining rituals, crafts, music, cuisine, storytelling, and religious or communal practices; transmitting this knowledge to younger generations; and adapting traditions to new social or geographic contexts, such as diasporas or multicultural settings.

They are studied via ethnography and oral history; methods include interviews, participant observation, and collaboration with communities to document practices without eroding them.

Significance: they help sustain identity and social memory, enable language revitalization, and provide continuity in rapidly changing societies. They can serve as bridges between generations and between communities and institutions such as schools, museums, and cultural centers.

Challenges: globalizing forces, secularization, migration, and digital media can both threaten and transform cultural transmission. An emphasis on tradition risks essentializing cultures or overlooking intra-community diversity; successful kulturbærere navigate negotiation between preservation and innovation.
