Kuivausrumpu, often referred to as a tumble dryer in English, is a household appliance designed to remove moisture from laundry after it has been washed. It works by tumbling wet clothes in a heated drum, which evaporates the water. The resulting moist air is then either vented outside the building or condensed and collected in a reservoir, depending on the dryer's type.

There are two primary types of kuivausrumpu: vented and condenser. Vented dryers expel the hot, moist air through a hose that must be connected to an exterior vent. This is generally the more affordable option upfront and requires less maintenance. Condenser dryers, on the other hand, cool the moist air inside the machine, causing the water vapor to condense into liquid. This water is collected in a removable tank that needs to be emptied periodically, or it can be plumbed to a drain. Condenser dryers offer more flexibility in placement as they do not require an external vent.

A third, more energy-efficient type is the heat pump dryer. These dryers use a heat pump to heat the air, similar to a refrigerator in reverse, making them significantly more economical to run than traditional vented or condenser models. However, they typically have a higher initial purchase price.

Kuivausrumpu typically feature various settings for different fabric types and drying needs, including timed drying, sensor drying which stops the cycle when clothes are dry, and specific programs for delicate items or quick drying. Proper use and maintenance, such as cleaning the lint filter after each use and emptying the water tank on condenser models, are essential for efficient operation and longevity.
