Kuivapuku, or dry suit, is a waterproof diving garment designed to keep the wearer dry in cold or wet environments. It forms a watertight seal at the neck and wrists and is equipped with a waterproof zipper. In diving, the suit contains a thin air layer that provides thermal insulation and assists with buoyancy control, which is managed through an inflation valve and a deflation valve.

There are two common constructions used in diving: trilaminate dry suits and neoprene dry suits. Trilaminate suits are lightweight and durable, made from layered fabric with a polyurethane coating. Neoprene dry suits are thicker and provide additional intrinsic insulation but can be heavier and less flexible. Both types require appropriate undergarments to tailor warmth and moisture management for different water temperatures and activity levels. Seals at the neck and wrists (and sometimes ankles) must fit well to prevent water ingress, and entry is typically via a front or diagonal zipper.

Use and safety considerations: a dry suit is used for extended time in cold water, rescue and industrial diving, and recreational diving in cool climates. Divers must be trained in proper donning, buoyancy management, and valve operation. Before diving, check seals, zipper, and valves for wear; avoid forcing damaged components; never open a valve underwater unless trained to do so. After dives, rinse, dry, and inspect the suit; follow manufacturer’s maintenance guidance and schedule professional servicing as needed.
