Kudostyyppimääritykset, or tissue typing, is a laboratory procedure used to determine the compatibility of tissues or organs for transplantation. It involves identifying specific markers on the surface of cells, primarily human leukocyte antigens (HLA), which are proteins encoded by a group of genes on chromosome 6. These HLA molecules play a crucial role in the immune system's ability to distinguish between self and non-self, and differences in HLA types can trigger an immune response, leading to rejection of a transplanted organ.

The process typically involves collecting blood samples from both the donor and the potential recipient. These samples are then analyzed using various techniques, such as serological methods or DNA-based typing. Serological methods use antibodies that bind to specific HLA antigens, while DNA-based methods analyze the genes that code for these antigens. The goal is to match as many HLA alleles between the donor and recipient as possible.
