Kryoablaatiolla, also known as cryoablation, is a medical procedure used to destroy abnormal or diseased tissue by freezing it. This technique leverages extreme cold to induce cell death, a process called cryonecrosis. The goal is to eliminate targeted cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

The procedure typically involves inserting a cryoprobe, a thin, hollow instrument, into or adjacent to the abnormal tissue. Gas, usually argon, is circulated through the probe, rapidly lowering its temperature to extremely low levels. This extreme cold creates an ice ball around the probe, encompassing and freezing the target tissue. The temperature and duration of freezing are carefully controlled by the medical professional based on the size, type, and location of the tissue being treated.

After the freezing phase, the gas flow is stopped, and the probe is allowed to warm up, causing the ice to thaw. In some cases, multiple freeze-thaw cycles may be performed to ensure complete destruction of the target tissue. Following the procedure, the dead tissue is gradually absorbed by the body or eliminated over time.

Kryoablaatiolla has various applications in medicine. It is commonly used to treat certain types of tumors, such as those in the liver, kidney, and prostate, as well as benign conditions like uterine fibroids and painful nerve tissues. Its minimally invasive nature often leads to quicker recovery times and less discomfort compared to traditional surgical methods.
