Kromosistot is a Finnish term that commonly refers to two related ideas in genetics. In one sense, it designates chromosomists—scientists who specialize in cytogenetics, the study of chromosome structure, number, and behavior in cells. In another sense, the term can describe the chromosome complement of a cell or organism, the full set of chromosomes that can be observed and analyzed (kromosisto; the plural form kromosistot is used in Finnish when referring to multiple complements).

Chromosomists (kromosomistit) work in laboratories, universities, and clinics. They typically hold training in biology, genetics, or related fields, and may specialize in clinical cytogenetics or research. In clinical settings they perform or interpret karyotyping, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and increasingly array-based tests to detect chromosomal abnormalities such as aneuploidies (for example, trisomy 21) or structural rearrangements implicated in cancer. In research, chromosomists study chromosome evolution, segregation during cell division, and genome organization.

When referring to the chromosome complement, kromosisto, the term denotes the complete set of chromosomes an organism possesses. In humans, this is 46 chromosomes in 23 pairs; in other species numbers vary, and ploidy levels range from haploid to polyploid. Chromosome complements are central to cytogenetics, diagnostic genetics, and comparative genomics, and abnormalities in number or structure can cause developmental disorders or contribute to cancer.

Historically, the chromosome theory linking inheritance to chromosomes was established in the early 20th century by scientists such as Sutton and Boveri. Advances in staining, banding techniques, and molecular cytogenetics since the 1970s–1990s have expanded the ability to visualize and analyze chromosomes, shaping modern genetics and personalized medicine.
