When a crystalloid substance dissolves in a solvent, it dissociates into individual ions or molecules. For example, when table salt (sodium chloride) dissolves in water, it breaks down into sodium ions (Na+) and chloride ions (Cl-). These ions are small and dispersed evenly throughout the solvent. This uniform distribution is a characteristic feature of crystalloid solutions.

The particles in a crystalloid solution are generally less than one nanometer in size. This small size allows them to remain dissolved indefinitely and not settle out over time. They also contribute to phenomena like osmosis and diffusion. In biological contexts, crystalloid solutions are crucial. For instance, intravenous fluids administered to patients are often crystalloid solutions, designed to replenish body fluids and electrolytes. Examples include saline solutions (0.9% sodium chloride) and Ringer's lactate. These solutions are readily absorbed by the body and help maintain fluid balance.
