Kristallfältteorin, often abbreviated as CFT, is a concept used in solid-state physics to describe the electronic structure of transition metal ions in ionic compounds. It provides a model for understanding how the arrangement of surrounding ions, called ligands, influences the energy levels of the d electrons in the metal atom.

In a free transition metal ion, the five d orbitals have the same energy level, a state known as degeneracy. However, when the ion is placed in a crystal lattice, these d orbitals are no longer equivalent due to the electrostatic interactions with the surrounding ligands. The ligands, being charged or polar, create an electric field that breaks the degeneracy of the d orbitals.

Kristallfältteorin explains that the d orbitals will split into different energy levels depending on their spatial orientation relative to the ligands. For instance, in an octahedral complex, the d orbitals pointing directly towards the ligands will experience greater repulsion and thus higher energy, while those pointing between the ligands will have lower energy. This splitting is known as crystal field splitting, and its magnitude is denoted by Δo.

The degree of splitting depends on the nature of the metal ion, the ligands, and the geometry of the complex. This splitting of d orbitals is crucial for understanding many properties of transition metal compounds, including their color, magnetic behavior, and catalytic activity. CFT is a simplified model and does not consider covalent bonding interactions between the metal and ligands, which are accounted for in more advanced theories like molecular orbital theory.
