Kranialnervstester refers to a series of clinical examinations used to assess the function of the twelve cranial nerves. These nerves originate directly from the brain and control sensory and motor functions of the head and neck, as well as certain visceral functions. A comprehensive cranial nerve examination is a fundamental part of a neurological assessment.

The testing process for each cranial nerve is specific. For example, olfactory nerve (CN I) function is assessed by testing the sense of smell. Optic nerve (CN II) is evaluated through visual acuity, visual fields, and fundoscopy. The accessory nerve (CN XI) is tested by assessing shoulder shrug and head turning. Finally, the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) is evaluated by examining tongue protrusion and movement.

Abnormalities in cranial nerve function can indicate a variety of neurological conditions, including stroke, tumors, infections, trauma, or demyelinating diseases. The results of kranialnervstester help localize the lesion and guide further diagnostic investigations and treatment.
