Kovuuslyijykyniä, often referred to as pencil hardness scales, are a standardized system used to denote the hardness of graphite pencils. This system originated in Europe and is widely adopted internationally. The scale ranges from hard (H) to soft (B), with the number preceding the letter indicating the degree of hardness or softness.

The scale begins with 'H' pencils, which are harder and produce lighter, finer lines. These are useful for technical drawing, drafting, and detailed work where precision is paramount. As the number increases, the graphite becomes harder and the line lighter, for example, 2H, 4H, or 6H. Conversely, 'B' pencils are softer and produce darker, broader lines. These are favored by artists for sketching, shading, and creating rich tonal variations. The higher the number, the softer and darker the graphite, such as 2B, 4B, or 6B.

In the middle of the scale is 'HB', representing a balance between hardness and softness, making it a versatile choice for general writing and sketching. The 'F' (Fine point) designation is often placed between HB and H, indicating a pencil that sharpens to a fine point and is slightly harder than HB. Understanding the hardness scale allows users to select the appropriate pencil for their specific needs, whether it be for technical precision or artistic expression. The graphite core of a pencil is a mixture of graphite and clay, and the ratio of these two components determines its hardness. More clay results in a harder pencil and a lighter mark, while more graphite yields a softer pencil and a darker mark.
