Koudvormen is a manufacturing process used to shape metal at or near room temperature. This process relies on plastic deformation, where the metal is permanently altered without fracturing. Unlike hot forming, koudvormen does not require heating the material, which offers several advantages.

The primary benefit of koudvormen is its ability to achieve precise dimensions and excellent surface finish. The cold temperatures inhibit the formation of scale and decarburization that can occur during hot working. Furthermore, the process can significantly increase the strength and hardness of the metal through work hardening. This is because the plastic deformation rearranges the crystal structure of the metal, creating internal stresses that impede further movement of dislocations.

Common koudvormen techniques include cold rolling, cold drawing, cold forging, and extrusion. Cold rolling involves passing metal sheets or strips through rollers to reduce their thickness and improve their properties. Cold drawing is used to reduce the cross-section of wires or bars by pulling them through a die. Cold forging shapes metal by deforming it under compressive forces, often in a die. Cold extrusion forces metal through a die to create more complex shapes.

Koudvormen is widely used in various industries, including automotive, aerospace, and consumer goods, for producing components like fasteners, shafts, wires, and structural parts. While it requires higher forces than hot forming due to the increased material resistance, the superior dimensional accuracy, surface quality, and mechanical properties often make it the preferred method for producing high-performance metal parts.
