Korvakipua, commonly known as earache, is a painful sensation in or around the ear. It can affect people of all ages, though it is particularly prevalent in young children. The pain can range from mild to severe and may be constant or intermittent.

There are several potential causes for korvakipua. The most common is an ear infection, often otitis media, which is an inflammation of the middle ear. This can be caused by bacteria or viruses, frequently following a cold or upper respiratory infection. Other causes include swimmer's ear (otitis externa), an infection of the ear canal; fluid buildup in the middle ear; or even referred pain from other areas like the jaw or teeth.

Symptoms associated with korvakipua can include the pain itself, a feeling of fullness in the ear, temporary hearing loss, fever, and sometimes discharge from the ear. In infants and young children, signs might also include irritability, tugging at the ear, and difficulty sleeping.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical professional examining the ear with an otoscope to look for signs of infection or inflammation. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. For bacterial infections, antibiotics may be prescribed. Viral infections often resolve on their own, with pain relief measures like over-the-counter pain relievers and warm compresses being recommended. For conditions like swimmer's ear, medicated ear drops are usually effective. If fluid buildup is the issue, watchful waiting or, in some cases, a procedure to insert ear tubes might be considered.
