Kormányalakítás is the Hungarian term for government formation. It refers to the process by which a new government is established in Hungary following a parliamentary election, a vote of no confidence, or the resignation of the incumbent government.

The process typically begins after a general election where voters elect members of the National Assembly. The President of Hungary then typically invites the leader of the party or coalition that has secured a majority of seats to form a government. This leader is then tasked with appointing a Prime Minister and other ministers.

The nominated Prime Minister and their proposed cabinet must then be approved by the National Assembly. This usually involves a vote of confidence. If the proposed government receives the support of a majority of the Members of Parliament, it is officially formed.

If no single party or coalition achieves a majority, or if the first nominated candidate fails to secure a vote of confidence, the President may invite another political leader to attempt to form a government. In such scenarios, coalition negotiations become crucial. The process can sometimes be lengthy and complex, depending on the political landscape and the number of parties represented in the parliament.
