Kopparupparbetningsanläggningar, often referred to as copper processing plants, are industrial facilities where mined copper ore is transformed into a usable form, typically refined copper metal. The process begins with the extraction of copper ore from the earth. This raw ore then undergoes several stages of processing.

Initial steps usually involve crushing and grinding the ore to liberate the copper minerals. This is followed by a beneficiation process, most commonly flotation, where the copper minerals are separated from waste rock using a combination of chemicals and air bubbles. The resulting concentrate, which has a higher copper content, is then transported to a smelter.

At the smelter, the copper concentrate is heated to high temperatures in furnaces to remove impurities and produce a semi-refined product called blister copper, which is about 98-99% pure copper. Blister copper is then sent to a refinery for final purification.

The refining stage typically involves either electrolytic refining or fire refining. Electrolytic refining is the most common method and produces high-purity copper cathodes (99.99% pure). Fire refining uses heat and oxidizing agents to remove remaining impurities. The refined copper is then cast into various shapes, such as ingots or rods, for use in a wide range of industries, including electrical, construction, and manufacturing.
