Koordinantteja, often referred to as coordinates, are a system of values used to define the position of a point or object within a given space. This space can be two-dimensional, such as a flat surface, or three-dimensional, like the physical world we inhabit, or even higher-dimensional mathematical spaces. The most common coordinate system is the Cartesian coordinate system, named after René Descartes.

In a two-dimensional Cartesian system, a point is defined by two numbers, usually denoted as (x, y). The x-coordinate represents the horizontal distance from a fixed origin point, and the y-coordinate represents the vertical distance from that same origin. The origin is typically the point (0, 0) where the x-axis and y-axis intersect.

For three-dimensional space, a third coordinate, often denoted as z, is added, resulting in a point represented as (x, y, z). This z-coordinate typically indicates the depth or height from a reference plane. Axes are perpendicular to each other and intersect at the origin, forming a grid that allows for precise location identification.

Coordinate systems are fundamental to many fields, including mathematics, physics, engineering, geography (where latitude and longitude are a form of spherical coordinates), computer graphics, and navigation. They provide a standardized way to describe locations, enabling measurements, calculations, and graphical representations of spatial relationships. Other coordinate systems exist, such as polar coordinates, which use distance from the origin and an angle, and spherical coordinates, which are used for three-dimensional locations.
