A kontrollklapi, often translated as a check valve or non-return valve, is a mechanical device designed to allow fluid flow in only one direction. It is crucial in many industrial and domestic applications where preventing backflow is essential to system integrity and safety. The operation of a kontrollklapi is based on differential pressure. When the pressure on the inlet side exceeds the pressure on the outlet side, the valve opens, permitting flow. Conversely, if the outlet pressure becomes higher than the inlet pressure, the valve automatically closes, stopping the flow and preventing it from reversing.

There are various types of kontrollklapi, each suited for different purposes and flow conditions. Common designs include swing check valves, which use a hinged disc that swings open and shut; lift check valves, where a disc or ball lifts off its seat to allow flow; and diaphragm check valves, which utilize a flexible diaphragm to control flow.
