Kontrastisuhteen, often translated as contrast ratio, is a fundamental concept in visual display technology. It quantifies the difference between the brightest white and the darkest black that a display can produce. A higher contrast ratio indicates a greater range of luminance, meaning the display can show deeper blacks and brighter whites simultaneously. This results in a more vibrant and lifelike image with more discernible detail in both shadow and highlight areas.

The contrast ratio is typically expressed as a ratio, such as 1000:1 or 10,000:1. A 1000:1 contrast ratio means that the brightest white is 1000 times brighter than the darkest black. This measurement is crucial for evaluating image quality, especially in applications like photography, filmmaking, and gaming where precise color reproduction and dynamic range are important. Different display technologies, such as LCD and OLED, have varying inherent contrast ratios. OLED displays, for instance, are known for their exceptionally high contrast ratios because each pixel can be individually turned off, achieving true black.
