Kontekstualismiin is a Finnish term that translates to contextualism. In philosophy, it generally refers to theories that emphasize the importance of context in understanding meaning, truth, justification, or knowledge. Different forms of contextualism exist, each focusing on a specific aspect.

Linguistic contextualism, for instance, suggests that the meaning of a word or sentence is not fixed but depends heavily on the surrounding linguistic expressions and the situation in which it is uttered. This means that a phrase can have different interpretations depending on the conversation it is part of, the speaker's intentions, and the shared background knowledge of the participants.

Epistemic contextualism, a prominent view in epistemology, argues that the standards for knowledge or justification can vary depending on the context. What counts as sufficient evidence or a good reason to believe something in one situation might not be adequate in another. For example, in a casual conversation, a simple assertion might be sufficient grounds for belief, whereas in a scientific investigation, rigorous evidence would be required.

Truth contextualism posits that the truth value of a proposition can be context-dependent. This is distinct from simple factual changes; rather, it suggests that the very criteria for truth can shift with context. Pragmatic contextualism, on the other hand, highlights how the practical goals and purposes of an inquiry can influence what is considered meaningful or true. The core idea across these various forms is that meaning and knowledge are not absolute but are shaped by, and relative to, the specific circumstances in which they arise.
