Konsignaatiomyynti, also known as consignment selling, is a retail method where a seller (consignor) transfers goods to a third party (consignee) for the purpose of selling them. The consignee pays the consignor only after the goods are sold. This arrangement is common for new or used items, particularly in specialized markets like clothing boutiques, antique stores, or art galleries.

Under a consignment agreement, the consignor retains ownership of the goods until they are sold. The consignee acts as an agent for the consignor, taking possession of the items and displaying them for sale in their store or online. The consignee is responsible for marketing, pricing, and facilitating the sale. They typically earn a commission, which is a percentage of the final sale price, with the remainder going to the consignor.

This model benefits both parties. Consignors can sell items without needing their own retail space or handling the sales process directly, often for items they might not otherwise be able to sell. Consignees gain access to a wider inventory without the upfront cost of purchasing goods, reducing their financial risk. If an item doesn't sell within an agreed-upon timeframe, it is usually returned to the consignor. Agreements often specify return policies, commission rates, and the duration of the consignment period.
