Consignees

A consignee is the person or organization that is designated to receive goods in a shipment. In logistics and trade, the consignor (shipper) is the party that sends the goods, while the consignee is the intended recipient at the destination.

In shipping documents, the consignee is typically named on documents such as the bill of lading, air waybill, or other transport records. The consignee may be a specific company or individual, or it may be an entity acting on behalf of the buyer. In some arrangements, the goods are directed “to the order of” a party, which can affect how control and delivery are managed.

Roles and responsibilities of the consignee often include taking delivery of the goods, arranging or facilitating customs clearance, and paying any import duties, taxes, or charges required by law or the terms of sale. The consignee may also be responsible for providing identification, releasing documentation to claim the shipment, and handling storage or onward transport if delivery is delayed.

Types of consignees can vary. A named consignee is a specific entity identified in the contract and documents. A typical consignee may be the buyer, a warehouse or distribution center, a freight forwarder acting as an agent, or a customs broker.

Legal and practical considerations include the transfer of title or risk depending on the contract terms, and the consignee’s obligation to receive and process the shipment in accordance with applicable regulations. In cases of nondelivery or improper claim, carriers may impose penalties, storage charges, or returns.
