Kompresler are mechanical devices that increase the pressure of a gas by reducing its volume or by imparting energy to the gas. They are used in a wide range of systems, including refrigeration and air conditioning, manufacturing, energy production, and process industries.

They are commonly classified into positive-displacement and dynamic (or kinetic) types. Positive-displacement compressors trap a discrete amount of gas and reduce its volume to raise pressure. This group includes reciprocating (piston) compressors, rotary screw compressors, scroll compressors, vane compressors, and diaphragm compressors. Dynamic compressors use high-speed rotation to impart kinetic energy to the gas, which is then converted to pressure; the main examples are centrifugal (radial) compressors and axial compressors.

Reciprocating and rotary machines are often configured for single-stage or multi-stage operation, sometimes with intercooling between stages to improve efficiency and reduce discharge temperatures. Scroll and vane designs are valued for compact size and smooth operation, while centrifugal and axial machines are typical in high-flow, high-pressure applications such as power plants and large industrial facilities.

Applications vary from lifting and delivering compressed air for tools and processes to serving as the core component in refrigeration cycles, natural gas transmission, and petrochemical processing. Key performance metrics include pressure ratio, volumetric efficiency, isentropic efficiency, and, for refrigeration-related uses, coefficient of performance.

Maintenance and safety considerations include lubrication, cooling, filtration of intake air, monitoring of vibration and temperatures, and the integrity of seals and valves. Proper operation and routine servicing are essential to prevent leaks, overheating, and wear.
