A komposztgép, often referred to as a compost bin or composter, is a container or structure designed to facilitate the decomposition of organic waste materials. These materials can include kitchen scraps such as fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, and eggshells, as well as yard waste like leaves, grass clippings, and small twigs. The primary purpose of a komposztgép is to accelerate the natural process of composting, transforming waste into a nutrient-rich soil amendment.

Komposztgépek come in various forms. Some are simple open-air bins, often made of wood or wire mesh, allowing for good aeration. Others are enclosed tumblers, typically made of plastic, which can be rotated to mix the compost and speed up decomposition. There are also more sophisticated electric composting machines that use heat and agitation to break down organic matter in a matter of hours or days, though these are less common for household use.

The effectiveness of a komposztgép relies on maintaining a balance of "green" (nitrogen-rich) and "brown" (carbon-rich) materials, along with adequate moisture and aeration. Green materials provide nitrogen essential for microbial activity, while brown materials offer carbon for energy and structure. By controlling these factors, users can efficiently produce compost for gardening and improving soil health, thereby diverting organic waste from landfills.
