Kompostoria refers to a traditional composting toilet system that utilizes a composting chamber or bin, often elevated, to process human waste. The core principle involves the aerobic decomposition of feces and urine, aided by the addition of carbon-rich materials like sawdust, wood chips, or straw. This bulking material provides aeration and absorbs moisture, facilitating the breakdown of organic matter by microorganisms.

Typically, a kompostoria features a pedestal or seat above a removable chamber. After defecation, the user adds a scoop of bulking material. Urine may be collected separately or allowed to drain into the compost, depending on the specific design. Over time, the composted material undergoes significant reduction in volume and mass, transforming into a stable, humus-like substance that can be safely used as a soil amendment after a sufficient curing period.
