Kompaktítás is a concept often encountered in mathematics, particularly in analysis and topology. It refers to a property of sets within a topological space. A set is considered compact if it possesses certain characteristics that make it "small" or "bounded" in a topological sense.

More formally, a set in a topological space is compact if every open cover of the set has a finite subcover. An open cover is a collection of open sets whose union contains the set in question. The condition of compactness means that no matter how you try to cover the set with open sets, you can always find a finite number of those open sets that still manage to cover it. This property is fundamental and has significant implications for the behavior of functions defined on these sets.

In the context of metric spaces, compactness is equivalent to being both closed and totally bounded. Totally bounded means that for any positive epsilon, the space can be covered by a finite number of open balls of radius epsilon. The closed condition ensures that the set contains all its limit points. Therefore, in metric spaces, compact sets can be thought of as closed and "containable within a finite number of small neighborhoods."

The concept of compactness is crucial because many important theorems in analysis, such as the Extreme Value Theorem (which states that a continuous real-valued function on a compact set attains its maximum and minimum values), rely on the compactness of the domain. It provides a way to guarantee the existence of certain properties that might not hold in more general, non-compact spaces.
