Kombinatorikën is a branch of mathematics that studies counting, arrangement, and structure in finite sets of objects. It asks how many configurations exist under given rules and how those configurations relate to each other. The field connects to probability, algebra, and computer science.

Two basic problems are counting with and without regard to order. Permutations count distinct orderings, with and without repetition. Combinations count selections where order does not matter. Other topics include partitions, compositions, and derangements, as well as counting under symmetry.

Core methods include the multiplication principle, factorials, and binomial coefficients. Advanced tools use inclusion–exclusion, generating functions, and recurrence relations; in many problems, symmetry is handled by Pólya’s enumeration theorem.

Kombinatorikën also studies structures such as graphs, designs, and codes. These areas lead to applications in algorithm design, cryptography, network design, error-correcting codes, and statistical sampling.

Historically, combinatorial ideas appear in ancient problems; modern development is linked to Euler, Cayley, and later Pólya and others. Today the field remains active, with diverse subareas and a broad range of theoretical and practical applications.
