Kolmivaihejärjestelmä, often translated as three-phase system, is a method of electric power generation, transmission, and distribution. It is the most common type of AC power system used worldwide. Instead of a single alternating current, a three-phase system utilizes three alternating currents that are out of phase with each other by 120 degrees. This arrangement offers several significant advantages over single-phase systems.

The primary benefit of a three-phase system is its efficiency. It allows for the transmission of more power over the same size conductors compared to a single-phase system. This is because the power delivery is more constant, with the sum of the instantaneous power of the three phases never dropping to zero. This constant power flow also results in smoother operation of AC motors, making them more efficient and requiring less starting torque.

Furthermore, three-phase power is ideal for large industrial loads and electric motors. It can provide a more uniform torque, reducing vibrations and wear on machinery.
