Koletsüstiit is the medical term for inflammation of the gallbladder. This condition most commonly occurs when a gallstone blocks the cystic duct, the tube that carries bile from the gallbladder to the small intestine. This blockage causes bile to back up, leading to irritation and inflammation of the gallbladder wall.

Other causes of koletsüstiit can include infections, trauma, or tumors. However, gallstones are the overwhelming majority cause. Symptoms typically include severe pain in the upper right abdomen, which may radiate to the right shoulder or back. This pain often worsens after eating fatty foods. Other symptoms can include fever, nausea, vomiting, and jaundice, which is a yellowing of the skin and eyes.

Diagnosis of koletsüstiit usually involves a physical examination, blood tests to check for signs of infection and inflammation, and imaging studies such as an ultrasound or CT scan to visualize the gallbladder and detect gallstones.

Treatment for koletsüstiit depends on its severity. Mild cases may be managed with pain medication, antibiotics, and a low-fat diet. However, more severe cases often require hospitalization and surgical removal of the gallbladder, a procedure known as a cholecystectomy. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent complications such as gallbladder rupture or infection spreading to the bloodstream.
