Kolecystitt is the medical term for inflammation of the gallbladder. This condition most commonly arises when a gallstone obstructs the cystic duct, the tube that carries bile from the gallbladder to the small intestine. This blockage prevents bile from draining, leading to a buildup of pressure and subsequent inflammation within the gallbladder.

Symptoms of kolecystitt can include sudden and severe pain in the upper right abdomen, which may radiate to the shoulder or back. This pain is often described as sharp and can last for several hours. Other common signs include fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal tenderness. In some cases, jaundice, a yellowing of the skin and eyes, may also occur if the inflammation affects bile flow.

The diagnosis of kolecystitt typically involves a physical examination, medical history, and imaging tests such as an ultrasound, which is the most common method for visualizing gallstones and gallbladder inflammation. Blood tests may also be performed to check for signs of infection or liver problems.

Treatment for kolecystitt usually involves hospitalization, pain management, antibiotics to treat any infection, and often, surgical removal of the gallbladder, a procedure known as a cholecystectomy. If left untreated, kolecystitt can lead to serious complications such as gallbladder rupture, infection of the bloodstream (sepsis), or pancreatitis.
