Koentsyymi A, often abbreviated as CoA, is a vital coenzyme in metabolism. It is a complex molecule composed of adenosine, pantothenic acid, and cysteamine. CoA plays a crucial role in the synthesis and oxidation of fatty acids, as well as in the citric acid cycle. Its primary function is to carry acyl groups, which are essentially two-carbon units derived from the breakdown of carbohydrates and fats.

In fatty acid metabolism, CoA is essential for both the activation of fatty acids for breakdown (beta-oxidation) and for their synthesis. During beta-oxidation, long-chain fatty acids are attached to CoA, forming fatty acyl-CoA, which then undergoes a series of reactions to produce acetyl-CoA, NADH, and FADH2. Acetyl-CoA can then enter the citric acid cycle for further energy production.

In the citric acid cycle, acetyl-CoA, derived from the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, is condensed with oxaloacetate to initiate the cycle. This cycle generates ATP, NADH, and FADH2, which are then used in oxidative phosphorylation to produce the majority of the cell's ATP. CoA is also involved in various other metabolic pathways, including the synthesis of cholesterol, steroid hormones, and neurotransmitters. Its versatility makes it a central molecule in cellular energy production and biosynthesis.
