Koeldekens (cooling blankets) are medical devices designed to lower or regulate body temperature by applying a cooled surface to the patient’s body. They are used to reduce fever, treat heat-related illness, and support temperature management during and after medical procedures. The blankets circulate chilled water or other coolant through internal channels, or employ phase-change materials that hold a fixed temperature. They are typically used with a control unit that regulates coolant temperature and flow.

Construction and operation: Most koeldekens consist of a flexible fabric cover with sealed channels. A pump circulates cold water or glycol through the blanket from a reservoir; the temperature is set on a control panel. Some variants use disposable covers or modular pads. Depending on design, cooling can target the whole body or specific regions. Clinicians monitor core temperature and skin condition to prevent overcooling or frostbite.

Applications: In hospitals and clinics, koeldekens are used to manage fever, support postoperative temperature control, and reduce metabolic demand in critically ill patients. They may also be used in the treatment of heat-related illness or during certain diagnostic procedures. They are part of external cooling strategies, alongside medications and hydration.

Safety and limitations: Improper or prolonged use can cause cold injuries, skin irritation, or shivering from rapid cooling. Regular maintenance is required to prevent microbial growth in circulating coolant. They are unsuitable for patients with certain skin conditions, peripheral vascular disease, or compromised sensation, and do not replace treatment of the underlying condition causing fever or hyperthermia.
