It is formed from the noun kod (code) with the suffix -irati. In some contexts it can be contrasted with šifrirati, which more specifically means to encrypt, though usage can overlap in informal speech.

In computing and information technology, kodirati refers to converting data from one form to another using a code. This includes encoding text into a character set (for example UTF-8), encoding audio or video streams, and applying coding schemes for data transmission or storage.
