Koacervációban refers to a process of liquid-liquid phase separation where a polymer-rich phase, known as the coacervate, forms within a solution. This phenomenon is driven by the interaction between different types of macromolecules, often polyelectrolytes with opposite charges. When these oppositely charged polymers are mixed in a suitable solvent, they can associate and aggregate, leading to the formation of a dense, liquid coacervate phase that separates from a dilute, polymer-poor phase.

The coacervate phase is characterized by a high concentration of the interacting polymers and can also encapsulate other molecules present in the solution, such as proteins, nucleic acids, or even small inorganic ions. This encapsulation ability has made coacervation a subject of significant interest in various scientific fields. In biology, coacervate droplets are hypothesized to have played a role in the origin of life, serving as primitive protocells that could compartmentalize biochemical reactions.

Beyond abiogenesis, coacervation has found applications in areas like drug delivery, where coacervate capsules can protect and release therapeutic agents. It is also utilized in food science for encapsulation of flavors and nutrients, and in materials science for creating novel functional materials. The formation and properties of coacervates are influenced by factors such as polymer concentration, pH, ionic strength, and temperature, allowing for tunable control over their behavior.
